  17. <p>    Art deco is alive and well in the hands of Erte. The
  18. flamboyant designer, who has completed work on seven carafes as
  19. well as sets and costumes for two Manhattan musicals, among
  20. other projects, promises "never, ever to retire. I'd be too
  21. bored." Nearing his 97th birthday, Erte, always an optimist, is
  22. remodeling his finca on Majorca. "The house," he says, "is my
  23. well-being." Fruit trees are being planted -- presumably to be
  24. enjoyed in the artist's old age.
